! ! ! After installation please ensure Unity works as shown in step #9 of this guide.

HOW TO INSTALL UNITY

STEP BY STEP GUIDE

Unity is installed in four stages. Unity Hub will be installed first. The Hub is the nerve centre where you can find all your games and software versions. Next you will create Unity ID. Next stage is installing the editor, where the games are built. Last installation is Visual Studio, where we write code to program our games.

This guide is for Windows. Mac OS looks slightly different but functions similarly, just follow the prompts.

You will also find download link and full instructions on Unity.com site. Click HERE to get started https://store.unity.com/download-nuo. Follow the prompts and click “Agree”, “OK” or “Allow” as prompted.

# 1

Click “DOWNLOAD” -button. Your download will start and will show on top corner on PC. In Mac this may show on different location.

Click the download open from the icon and click “Open when done” or “Open” from the menu.

Licence agreement window will pop up. Adult must accept Terms & Conditions for the under aged user. Click “I AGREE”.

Follow the prompts until the installation is finished.

# 2

Open Unity Hub. It will ask you to sign in. Under sign in box it says “CREATE UNITY ID”. Click and register as user by following prompts.

Once you have verfied your email as instructed, go back to Unity Hub and sign in with your user ID.

# 3

Next the Unity Editor will be installed. Click first “INSTALLS” on the left hand side menu. An empty window will open in front of you.

Next click “INSTALL EDITOR” on the right hand top corner.

# 4

Choose the top version “Recommended version” 2022.3… LTS. (Last digits might be different to the image, depending on their latest release.)

Click “INSTALL” and editor will start to download.

# 5

IMPORTANT!! A window will open in front of you. Click the tickbox on “Microsoft Visual Studio Community 2022”. DO NOT click anything else yet but move on to step 6.

# 6

Scroll down the list and also tick “WebGL Build Support” box.
Click “CONTINUE” on right hand bottom corner. Installation of the editor will begin.

# 7

This stage can take a while depending on your computer and internet connection speed. You can check progress by clicking on top of the download screen editor version. Details will open underneath as in the image.

The wizard will let you know once the installation is finished. If you see a little orange icon next to the installation, an error has occured. Click on the orange icon and choose “Try again”.

# 8

Once Unity Editor has been installed, installation of Visual Studio should start automatically. Pop up window will ask “Do you want to continue with workloads?”. Click “Install”. Scroll the screen down and choose “Game development with Unity”, after which choose “Install” again.

PLEASE NOTE! Visual Studio Code is not suitable for our lessons. If you have already downloaded it, please ensure you download Visual Studio only.

# 9

Installation is now finished. Now test that your installation is working.

Click “LEARN” on the left hand side menu. Click “Downloaded” where you see the second arrow in the image. Open any micro game to test the installation and familiarise yourself with Unity a little.

Your installation is successful if the game starts.

Your installation is now ready

! ! ! Ensure the microgame launches correctly and you can play it. If it doesn’t, you may have an issue with the installation. Please contact us if you face any problems.

BEFORE THE CLASS-

!!! Ensure your task bar at the bottom of the screen is locked, so your child will be able to navigate between the windows easily. To lock it, right click on the taskbar and choose option “Lock the taskbar”.

!!! Open Unity Hub and your browser with Zoom. This makes it easier to start the class and it’s easier for your child to follow the class with both windows already set up.

!!! If you have a tablet or a second screen, you can use both devices for the class. You can join the Zoom call on both the tablet and computer. Your child will then be able to see the class instructions on the tablet screen and use Unity on the computer screen and still be able share their Unity screen in case they need help. This is not a requirement though and your child will be able to attend with one screen only.

Also test your microphone and camera so that your child will be able to communicate with the class.

Feel free to contact me if you face any problems. We do our best to keep the installation guide up to date, but Unity can change the installation without warning, so do let us know if our instructions look different to the actual installation. We are happy to help!

You are now ready to start game building. Well done!!
